Inspired by the artists childhood memories, this artwork is associated with the land and sea of the Worimi Aboriginal people on the east-coast of Australia.

“I remember growing up on oyster farms and the grounds would be scattered with oyster shells. The shell remains are of feasting areas [middens] hidden by the changing sand dunes around my country.”

Oysters (rock shells) have been a source of food for Aboriginal peoples for thousands of years, with middens dating back to 6,000 BC.

The artwork’s overlapping circles are a motif for oyster shells buried in these hot coastal sands. The ochre colour pallet uses warm yellow to deep browns, colours that appear as the sand dunes shift in shape as they’re moulded by the changing conditions of the wind and sea. These natural colours pays both homage to oysters as a native species, and to the individual flavour profile of each oyster, which they draw from their environment.
