      Artwork Story

This Dreaming is associated with a place called Purturlu (Mount Theo), north-west of Yuendumu.

‘Ngalyipi’ [snake vine] is a green plant found on sandy spinifex plains and sandhills that climb up the trunks and branches of trees and shrubs. ‘Ngalyipi’ is depicted in paintings due to its medical use and importance in initiation ceremonies of young Japanangka/Japangardi men. For medical use; the vines are used as tourniquets, and the leaves and vines are used as bandages for wounds. Warlpiri people chew the leaves to treat colds and tie the stems around the forehead to cure headaches.

In Traditional Warlpiri paintings, iconography is used to represent the Jukurrpa [Dreaming]. In Ingrid’s painting, the sinuous lines are used to represent the ‘ngalyipi’ [snake vine].”
