Artwork Story

In Barkindji language, "Pirlatya" means "Mussels".

"Above all else, this collection is about the love I have for my Country, and every aspect of it. From the tiny patterns to the overwhelming colours of a sunset - this is an ode to that love".

The piece pays homage to Country by using photography to directly draw on the patterns and formations found in nature.

It celebrates what country organically creates by highlighting the organic minerals and markings of a mussel/midden shell as they spiral inward. By focusing on the intricate lustre of the shell we're reminded to take awe in, and preserve, the beauty in the world around us.

Using photographic manipulation, colour alterations reflect the colours of the changing sky, obscuring our understanding of the original pattern and its origin - subtly bridging the sky with the sea to acknowledge nature's ability to become otherworldly."
