Artwork Story

This Dreaming is associated with a place called Yangarnmpi, south of Yuendumu.

‘Ngatijirri’ [budgerigar] are small, bright green birds native to Central Australia and are common around the Yuendumu area. ‘Ngatijirri’ and their eggs are considered a delicacy. Men would hunt for ‘ngatijirri’ nests, and use ‘karli’ [boomerangs] to hunt the birds in flight. Each time the flock of ancestral ‘ngatijirri’ lands they perform ceremonies, singing and dancing as they fly and roost in the trees.

In Traditional Warlpiri paintings, iconography is used to represent the Jukurrpa [Dreaming]. In Kenneth’s painting, ceremonial sites are depicted as concentric circles. Cross-like shapes depict the footprints of the birds on the ground and give an indication of the large flocks of ‘ngatijirri’ that can be found near Yangarnmpi and other sites close to Yuendumu.
